Can eLearning ensure product safety?
Inculcating appropriate product safety practices in the employees of a biomanufacturing facility
Providing an experiential learning course to emphasise and induce the importance of product safety practices
The process of biological manufacturing is so fragile that even the slightest particles, like skin cells, clothing fibers, small hairs can contaminate a whole batch of the production. People and activities in biological manufacturing units are the primary sources of these contaminating agents. People naturally shed skin cells, hair and respiratory droplets. Their clothing also sheds particles and fibers when people move through the airflow in the room. As a result, biological manufacturing units require special dress considerations, also known as gowning. Gowning is critical to maintaining a clean hardware assembly environment by containing human and clothing-based particle shedding. In addition to rules regarding proper gowning, there are several requirements and restrictions in these units on personal items and attire like makeup, footwear, and clothing.
The client expected a course which would train the employees in recognizing the different controlled or classified areas where gowning is needed. Employees were also expected to adhere to all the gowning rules before entering these areas and familiarize themselves with the gowning requirements in each area.
To meet all the learning requirements, Constellar Consulting proposed a form of experiential learning whereby learners “learn by doing”. The whole course was divided into five zones that have different gowning requirements and processes to be followed when entering and exiting them. Various interactivities and animations were used to explain the gowning processes to the learners. These were further supplemented by videos showing the gowning process and images of the facility zones. This learning was then reinforced through assessment questions allowing the learners to master the right gowning techniques for entering, exiting, and operating within the manufacturing units.
The training helped the learners not just to know the gowning process but also understand why it is so important to adhere to the gowning process, which is of utmost importance for the company’s product safety. The training also aided the learners in understanding the right gowning techniques before entering, during operations inside and while exiting the manufacturing areas. The success of the learning module should be further proven by a reduction in the number of contamination incidents at the client manufacturing units.
